Additional vinyl storage

Additional vinyl storage

Postby Pumpkinman » Sat Jul 08, 2017 3:43 am

I was running short on record storage space again. There's a big surprise right ?? So a couple of weeks ago I went to IKEA and bought one of their Kallax units. They are open back and to deep for LP's. So with some 1"x3", 1 1/4 drywall screws and black acrylic paint. I fixed that little issue.

Nice job.

That space should last you until the end of next week. :rolling

I went in a different direction. The problem I have is that I am not a handy man. Sure, I know which end of the hammer to hold but that's about it. I don't have access to a truck so I can't run to Ikea as they don't ship the larger pieces.

I bought two vinyl racks from Gothic Furniture. They are hand made from wood, and are quite nice. But they are a bit on the expensive side since the cabinets are shipped fully assembled so they have to go freight, and they charge very high prices for shipping. A 15 bay rack cost about $450 plus another $250 to ship. Each bay holds about 50 LPs. So the rack will hold about 750 albums.

But I decided to look for alternatives due to the cost and happened upon a company in California called Waybasics. They sell storage cubes for a variety of applications, and have one specifically for vinyl. Each cube will hold 70 LPs and they cost $35 each. The cubes are made out of recycled paper (yes paper) and they are much stronger than you might think. The cubes can be stacked safely 4 high with a full load of records.

I thought I would give then a try and ordered 3 cubes to start. I was very impressed. Tool less assembly and ready to go in about 3 minutes. A few days after I received my initial order a discount code came via email good for $10 off per cube. So I ordered 15 additional cubes. That should be enough to tidy up the place and get my vinyl better organized.

It's great for me because I can grow my vinyl storage as needed.

Now that's a neat solution :thumb

The modular flexibility offering a variety of potential arrangements and additional growth are major plus points
