Another TT Joins The Roster - Dual CS 503-1

Another TT Joins The Roster - Dual CS 503-1

Popped a bid in on a Dual CS 503-1 last weekend and came up trumps

Collected today

The guy said he'd had it from new, had little use back then and has been packed away for the last 20+ years

I believe him - It's in really great shape

Even the original DN 249E Ortofon stylus looks to be OK
Not the neatest bonded tip I've seen, but the rock is in good shape

Image

Have had to replace the belt and did have a hiccup when connecting - Major Buzz from both channels
I suspected the cart coils at first, but these checked out OK

The problem was with the main RCA cables - both had perished and gone open circuit on the ground lines :scratch

No worries - Plenty of those here

Ten minutes of de-soldering, wire stripping and re-soldering and we're up and running

Image

Everything works a treat - Even the auto arm lift and shut off :Banana

Sounding not too bad at all, even with this relatively modest cart.
I might get round to putting on something a little more lofty when time allows - we shall see.
Happy to enjoy the new toy as originally specified for a bit.

It won't be displacing the Linn or it's older 1219 brother in the Den, but always nice to have a reasonably competent back up - just in case.

Thanks B50

Spent a bit more time spinning and checking a few things after my original post - it's not absolutely perfect!

There is a little bit of noise when running, more of a hum (assume from the motor) as opposed to mechanical noise.
Nothing too worrying but being so used to the silent Linn and the (not quite silent, but close enough) Dual 1219, it's a bit of a disappointment.
I'll do some googling to see how easy it is to get the motor out, stripped and cleaned.

I had another issue related to speed - it was running slightly fast.
I'd cleaned the motor spindle as it was dirty and despite this was getting just over 46 RPM on the 45 and 34.4 - 34.5 on the 33 settings.

However, a quick Google search unearthed a hidden adjustment point.

There's a hex screw in the semi-circular cut out to the right of the motor.

A tiny tweak and now bang on 33.3 and just out on 45 but good enough.
Isn't the internet great for this troubleshooting thang

So - It's still sounding very nice

Spinning one of my fav 80's Pop/Rock albums as I type

Berlin - Count Three & Pray

Image

Excellent stuff, but I have to skip past Take My Breath Away
Other than this the rest of the self penned tracks are superb!

Sounding pretty tasty through the CS-503 which is delivering pretty much all I would expect, including digging out plenty of bottom end.

A quick update, one week on.

A glitch crept in not long after making the last post.

On the 33 setting it started to lose stability then wandered up towards 45 RPM and floated just under this speed.

Just had a bit of a poke around under the cover to see what might be going on.

It ended up being another easy fix.
The speed selector operates a cam that closes points to pull in the 33rpm speed control circuit.
This was dirty, but easy to get to and more importantly clean.

Spinnin' some Joan Armatrading now and all is rock solid and back to normal.

The motor has quietened down too after a bit of use, seems smooth and quiet enough now.

Also spent a little bit of time polishing the cover - it's come up quite nice

Might just leave this be now as all appears to be working fine at the moment.

It's a simple, reasonably well made deck.
I'd suggest probably better than most of the entry level TT's of today.

Man, Davey, more 'tables, that's what you need! :)

This one is familiar territory, or at least the arm is, having had a 506. I think the difference is the 506 was sprung, while this one looks not to be.

Anyway, glads to see it found a home (and you've become quite adroit as a Dual mechanic).

Hurrah!

Hi Snead :thankx

This TT hasn't had much attention due to the 1019 coming along so soon after.

Have mothballed this one away for the time being - will be a nice simple deck for one of the younger kids if they get the bug like their elder sister.
