Another TT - Another Dual - 1019

Another TT - Another Dual - 1019

Postby DaveyW » Tue May 09, 2017 11:41 pm

It's a bit like the Bus's here in the UK, wait for one for ages, then two come along at the same time :grin:

Literally a week after getting the CS 503 home, a 1019 popped up locally on Ebay.

Have been interested in adding one of these to the collection for a while, it's the elder (late 60's vintage) brother of the 1219 which, as most here will know, has been my daily driver for the last 6 years or so.

Well! I popped in a bid and won this;

A stock Dual 1019 TT with a solid Yew plinth - Unfortunately no cover

Am to collect it tomorrow evening.

Not expecting everything to be perfect, the seller identified a couple of, what seem minor, issues.
But reserving judgement until I get it back here.

Will almost certainly need a thorough clean and lube, plus a new cart or stylus
Looking forward to getting it home, checking under the hood and, more importantly, getting to hear what it has to offer.

Thanks Guys

Collected it tonight

The seller had a treasure trove of vintage gear including several TT's including a mint Garrard 301 :drool

Really nice chap too, could have spent a long while talking TT's.

Well! Here it is

Only two problems I can find.

One is the motor is permanently on - I think I know what this is likely to be due to.

The second is a bit more tricky.
The arm return adjustment screw is missing :Dunno
And adjustment is required :roll:

This is what a 1019 typically has;

This deck has this;

Nothing to twiddle at all :scratch

Will need to venture under the hood - but that'll be for another night.

Just picked up another 8MR in near unused condition. Stone and mounting looks a little different than yours, and the other full 8MR cart I had sent you a few years ago for a listen........which I found a "problem" with. I remember you being a good bit "underwhelmed" with that one. I had then sent it to a guy in St Louis to mount his MCZ stylus in, and he felt the GF-1 body he has to be a better match. When i received his table for rebuild, he sent that and the GF-1 along. That 8MR body sounded about as "exciting" as that Gold cart I sent you for your data base, regardless of what stylus I ran in it. Plenty of tone but no life to the tone, and the uppermost registers are pretty recessed.

I'll mount this in the next day or so and give it a listen.

Thanks Marc

One of the slight down sides with this deck is that the sled has a fully integrated Shure (M75) cartridge body.

I'm gonna have to source a standard 1/2" sled before I can try any alternative carts.

PS got the arm alignment fixed thanks to some very helpful advice over at Audiokarma.
The adjustment screw is only visible & accessible when set to the 7" setting :slap

This is now fixed - The whole auto function is now working perfectly.

The one final issue is the motor won't shut down.
It's permanently on when plugged in

There's something not working in the switch as the linkages are fine.

It's not a massive issue as I always switch off power to each TT when not in use, but would be nice to fix.

Here's the switch in the "Stop" position when the motor (I believe anyway) should not be spinning, but is.

Just not able work out what the problem is - any thoughts would be most welcome

not a clue on the always on.......there's more wires and connections in that photo than there is in all my ARs combined.

All is not lost on the M75..........find the Shure Ne95ED stylus ( note the small "e" )

I did get the new(to me)8MR mounted up today.........good news / bad news....

good news, plays just fine

bad news, sounds more like my 10MR than my 8MX or 8MZ. Reaches places in the kick drum on "sign o the times" that only the 10MR, and XTZ can find.
The maggies will play flat down to about 34hz, this sounds like they're reaching 27hz.

Spinnin' now

The stylus appears OK but I'll look at replacing it.

Had a quick look at my N97xE - I think I could trim off the body and it'll fit.
Alternatively decent "proper" styli are available for sensible money
